A ruling by a US appeals court has again thrown into question the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which prevents the deportation of hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought into the United States as children. The fifth US circuit court of appeals decided that a federal district judge in Texas who last year declared DACA illegal, should take another look at the program, following revisions the Biden administration adopted in August.
The recent court ruling provides some relief for DACA recipients but still leaves their future uncertain. Now advocates for Dreamers and pushing the Senate to act during the lame-duck session on a previously passed bill, the Dream and Promise Act, which would create a path to citizenship. As of June 30, 594,120 immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children were enrolled in DACA, half of whom live in California, Texas, and Illinois, according to data published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). |
